This photo shows two heat transfer plates from a Plate & Frame Heat Exchanger. The one on the left was from a system with no water treatment whatsoever. Minerals in the cooling tower water built up and fouled this plate in only three years!
This slowly reduced the performance of his equipment as the cooling water was unable to flow through the heat exchanger. As heat transfer became almost non-existent, our customer risked damage to his equipment due to excessive temperatures.
The good news is that this sort of damage is avoidable and management of process and tower water is easy to do and will pay for itself in improved long term performance and reduced energy usage.
Evaporative Cooling Towers blow air over water to evaporate it, allowing for water temperatures below even the ambient temperature. This process leaves minerals behind, so a simple bleed (running some of the water to the drain regularly) will keep this in check. More sophisticated diagnostic methods are available, including monitoring conductivity of the water to determine the mineral levels. For cooling tower water, an algaecide may also be required.
